The heart of Huis Horison is green.

There are two different work areas in the Recycling department – Paper Recycling and General Recycling, and together this is the biggest group work area at Huis Horison.

Our recycling team sorts cardboardpaper and glass. Old books and magazines are taken apart and sorted into various types of paper, before being baled and sent for recycling. Our workers in this area take immense pride in their tasks. By supporting this programme, you will contribute to to creating dignity and pride to each of them.

We appeal to households and businesses to recycle their office paper, books, magazines, newspapers, cardboard and glass to us to sort for further recycling. Recycling provides an additional income stream to Huis Horison. (We get the highest prices for office paper of any colour and also for glass).

In 2023, Huis Horison came out tops in the Mpact Community Sites recycling program, and received 1st place with 75.811 tommes collected.

We appreciate donations of books in any type or condition. Books are sorted and good quality and sought after books are kept to be sold at our 2nd hand bookstore. Old or damaged books are recycled, and therefore create meaningful work for the people in this team.

Please ensure that all the items are empty and clean upon delivery. Please note: Unfortunately we do not accept other materials such as plastic or e-waste. Delivery times for recycling materials: Weekdays 09:00 – 12:30 and 14:00 – 16:30.

Document Shredding Service

We also offer a confidential shredding service which, in turn, creates an important job for the residents who have been trained to render this service.

Companies or individuals can bring their documents for shredding, which are weighed and charged at a rate of R3.50 per kg (including VAT) as of 1 April 2026. A letter of destruction (certificate) is issued for all shredding jobs once completed.
