Welcome to Village Thyme!
Situated on the Huis Horison grounds, in the building previously known as the “Studio”, Village Thyme is a welcoming, creative and tranquil eco space where residents, personnel, parents/family and the broader Stellenbosch community can relax and experience the Huis Horison magic.
At this unique coffee shop you can expect to enjoy coffee or a pot (yes, pot!) of tea with home-baked cake, something sweet, a salad, jaffle or meal of the day. Be sure to browse all the items for sale including rusks and cookies from our bakery, unique handmade items from our work areas and plants. The ever evolving inventory of hidden treasures, bric-a-brac, pre-loved and vintage clothing and secondhand books is a thrifting experience.

Village Thyme reflects our objective for a “Village” life at Huis Horison. “Thyme” is associated with our eco theme and plays on the word “time” – which reflects the atmosphere we seek to establish – a comfortable, healing and tranquil space where visitors and residents alike and relax and enjoy without being rushed. The name will appeal to the residents and that will be easy for them to remember and pronounce.

A purposeful space
We have created this venture so we can finally have a welcoming space to showcase all the industrious activities at Huis Horison, including items from various work areas and our eco projects and chicken village. Future activities and attractions will link into this point of confluence.
We provide the residents and day workers at Huis Horison with the opportunity to learn life skills, purchase essential items, snacks and drinks at affordable prices and enjoy a real shopping experience, not only on Village Fridays, but during the week as well. We offer a working opportunity to several residents thereby further embedding the concepts of being, belonging and becoming though meaningful work and teaching of additional skills.
As a not-for-profit organization, it is necessary for us to establish a profitable social enterprise that will assist in our quest for financial independence, so that the centre can keep on caring for our beneficiaries until the end of their lives. Therefore, every bit of support and cent of profit made, is ploughed directly back into Huis Horison.
We are still busy with some of the finishing touches, and in the meantime we want to express our sincere thank you to the Pamela Barlow Trust for making this a reality.
Venue for events
We hope to become the venue of choice for smaller events (20 to 30 guests) such as meetings, workshops and social events, i.e. kitchen- and stork tea’s, birthday parties, engagement parties, weddings, bachelor parties, etc, and invite public to reach out to us if you are interested in hosting your event at Village Thyme.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Sandra at villagethyme@huishorison.org.za
